Position Summary

Renaissance is looking for an experienced, innovative, and results-oriented Lead Fermentation Scientist or Engineer to lead the development of scalable yeast-based fermentation processes for our growing R&D team. This role will be based out of our offices located on the University of British Columbia’s main campus in beautiful Vancouver, BC.

As our Lead Fermentation Scientist / Engineer, you will bring a deep understanding of yeast physiology, biochemical engineering, and process scale-up to facilitate the successful development of lab and pilot-scale fermentations. This position will also include commissioning and operating pilot-scale bioreactors and downstream processing equipment, supporting scale-up efforts from lab to commercial scale.

In addition to specific R&D projects, this role also provides an opportunity to lead the tech transfer of strains and bioprocesses to contract manufacturers and commercial industrial partners. We encourage applications from scientists, fermentation engineers, and process engineers with expertise in yeast-based bioprocess development.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Independently advance R&D projects for fermentation production and delivery technology using advanced fermentation/bioreactor know-how and appropriate microbiological methods.
  • Conduct fermentation experiments using bench-scale bioreactors, including 10L NB Scientific Bioflo 3000 and 3L Getinge Applikon with Livit Flex, and contribute to the commissioning and operation of pilot-scale bioreactors.
  • Design and execute scalable media and growth optimization experiments, from shake flask to pilot-scale bioreactor fermentations.
  • Collaborate with strain development teams to prepare yeast for partner field trials.
  • Lead tech transfer of strains and bioprocesses to contract manufacturers and commercial production facilities.
  • Spearhead the procurement, commissioning, and validation of new bioprocessing equipment, including downstream processing equipment such as centrifuges, filtration systems, pasteurization, and drying technologies.
  • Effectively document experimental purpose, design, and data.
  • Develop new assays and experimental techniques based on literature research.
  • Foster an entrepreneurial mindset—bring new innovative ideas to the table and challenge the status quo; critically assess current methods and protocols and identify areas for efficiency, improvements, and innovation.
  • Contribute to writing peer-reviewed scientific publications and patent applications.
  • Regularly update management, the team, and the company on project progress; clearly and openly communicate project and process results, successes, challenges, and ideas.
  • Foster an ongoing collaborative environment—leverage peer skillsets and experience to advance your own projects and offer your expertise to help progress other team projects.
  • Lead and mentor junior lab staff and technicians, providing technical guidance, training, and support to ensure the successful execution of experiments by effectively delegating tasks, troubleshooting challenges, and promoting professional development within the team.
  • Additional duties, as relevant and required.

Education & Experience Required:

  • M.Sc./Ph.D. in fermentation science, biochemical engineering, process engineering, microbiology, or equivalent discipline.
  • Demonstrated success with the timely development and scale-up of a microbial fermentation process, including knowledge in yeast biology and fermentation science.
  • Experience commissioning, validating, and operating pilot-scale bioreactors and downstream processing equipment, including centrifuges, filtration, pasteurization, and drying.
  • Experience using NB Scientific bioreactors and Getinge Applikon Bioreactors is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of industrial yeast production and commercialization of yeast-based IP technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in English, clearly expressing ideas in written and oral communications.
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot experiments; analyze results/data from such experiments to develop logical next steps to move the project forward.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and in a team setting; strong self-starter work ethic/attitude.
